Help Prevent Identity Theft -
New Data Storage Regulations

As part of
ForeSite's proactive approach to technology, we want to make you
aware of a new regulation that sets minimum standards that
organizations must meet in order to protect personal information to
prevent identity theft.
If your organization possesses personal information about a
resident of Massachusetts, a new regulation passed by the
Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs states that you must have
a Written Information Security Plan (WISP) and the following
electronic security measures in place by May 1, 2009.
Are you prepared to:
- Create a Written Information Security Plan (which all employees
must sign) and amend employment contracts to comply with the
plan?
- Designate which employees have access to personal information
and force them to change their passwords regularly?
- Plan for a way to alert staff if there is a security breach to
your systems and what to do next?
- Monitor electronic systems against attack and block users who
make unauthorized attempts to access personal information?
- Have firewall and antivirus protection in place kept up-to-date
with the latest patches?
- Encrypt all wireless data, information being sent over public
networks (including any email with personal information, and any
laptop or removable media that contains personal information?
Although compliance may seem daunting, most of the requirements are
standard best practices recommended by ForeSite and we can help

the regulation should know what policies they have in place as
similar legislation will likely follow from other states and/or
Federal government due to the widespread increase in security
breaches of electronic information.
